I didn't buy this book either, but borrowed one from a friend (apologies to the publisher) who had purchased it before heading off to Japan. I found it an interesting and worthwhile read, containing lots of tidbits I would never have known about otherwise, plus some very amusing anecdotes.

What interested me was the romantic subplot. The author heads off to Japan and dumps his girlfriend back home after arriving. She is made to appear a bit of a nutter, but there are always two sides to a story ;) The protaganist then doesn't appear to have much of a love life until a local lass appears on the scene. A sort of romantic tension crackles through the last half of the book as you wonder whether he will be the bastard lad (as I thought he very well would be/is) and leave her in the lurch or whether they ride off into the sunset together. I won't put the spoiler here. If you can't get hold of a copy you may find it on another site somewhere.

Different people will get different things from this book. As someone who hasn't been to Japan (but would very much like to) I thought this was a good introduction to Japan and the life of an English teacher. Some of the stories my friend emails back or blogs resonate with my readings of the book.
